Oprah Winfrey — everyone’s favorite talk show host — has teamed up with transportation officials to declare today “No Phone Zone Day,” in an effort to curb distracted drivers.
The message as simple: Put down the phone while behind the wheel.
The “No Phone Zone” campaign urges states to pass laws that ban phone use in cars or texting while driving. At the time of this writing Twenty-five states ban texting while driving, but Texas only restricts cell phone usage in school zones.
“My biggest hope for the No Phone Zone campaign is that it becomes mandatory that no one uses their phone in the car or texts while driving — just as seat belts are mandatory, just as driving while drunk is considered absolutely taboo,” Ms. Winfrey said in a statement. “I’m hoping that this becomes not just law, but second nature for all of us.”
At any given moment during the day, an estimated 800,000 drivers are using cell phones, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
